Roses have a long and colorful history. We believe that the species is more than 35-40 million years old based on fossil evidence from Colorado, North America, Europe and Asia. It is thought that these early flowers, the wild sweetbrier seemed, were used for food and
medicine. They had five petals and were usually either pink or white.
From these humble beginnings, now is the most complex family tree of all known flowers with more than 30,000 species. The cultivation of this flower we think began in Asia 5000 years ago and have been a part of our experience since that time.
Cultivated roses were introduced to Europe from China in the late eighteenth century. This was a repeat flowering variety. From here, experts began to old roses (before 1800) and modern roses (grown and hybridized in England and France in the 19th century) to split. Until that time, old roses were only shades of pink or white (in Europe). Where the red rose from China came on the scene in Europe after 1800. The Chinese kept written records of their roses. Confucius (500 BC) recognized the growing and cultivation of roses in the Rose Garden of the Imperial Chinese emperor.
Yellow roses appeared after a Frenchman Joseph Permet-Ducher was a mutant yellow flower. He was breeding for 20 years trying to make his own prior to the discovery. Would not you know, Mother Nature always knows best! At this point, only a true blue or true black rose could not be found or created, but both are very close!
Roses are used as an aphrodisiac or medicinal purposes, cosmetics, perfumes, aromatherapy and even worshiped! We buy more than 1.2 billion cut roses in the U.S. per year! His 1st Valentine's Day than Mother's a good 2nd. There are thousands of Rose Societies. (Talking about clubbing!) They have inspired musicians, poets, writers and even artists! Did you know that the rose was so popular, it became legal tender?
